The APFT consists of three events: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2-mile run. Each event measures muscular endurance and aerobic capacity. Soldiers must complete all three for a valid score.
Soldiers must score at least 60 points in each event. A total minimum score of 180 out of 300 is required. Scores vary by age and gender standards.
Scoring is based on the number of repetitions and run time. Each event has a point scale from 0 to 100 points. The final score is the sum of the three events.
Active duty soldiers take the APFT twice a year. Reserve and National Guard soldiers must test once a year. Testing ensures ongoing physical readiness.
Soldiers who fail are enrolled in a remedial program. They must retest and pass within a set time frame. Continued failure can lead to administrative separation.
Focus on cardio, muscular endurance, and flexibility training. Incorporate regular practice of push-ups, sit-ups, and running. Consistency and recovery are key to improvement.
